Born in Manchester UK, John has been studying Eastern traditions since (the age of 8) 1968, Chinese Martial Arts from 1972 and Buddha’s Dharma since 1974.
Starting Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) in 1980 with the RoseLi school and also having the great honour to be taken as a closed-door student in 1983 by Sifu S Kwok in the Wing Chun system.
Continuing Taiji with several teachers mainly as a health exercise and for his mother’s sake until John had the great fortune to meet Master Lau Kim Hong of Malaysia and Master Tan Ching Ngee of Singapore in July 1989. John travelled yearly to Malaysia and Singapore from 1993 to 2005, during which time he became a ‘closed-door’ disciple of Master Lau Kim Hong and a Zheng (Yang) style Taiji 3rd generation successor and also a representative of Master Tan. Yearly I had Masters from Malaysia or Singapore visiting my schools in the UK, and Europe.
Since 1996 I began my studies of Chen style taiji mainly with Master Fu Shang Wee of Singapore whilst he was visiting me in the UK and Grandmaster Zhu Tiancai (who also visited me twice in Manchester). John is still happy to give basic and advanced correction for Zheng/Cheng 37 form and associated Yang syllabus including specialising in 2 person San Shou forms, Yang Kwai Taiji and Broadsword sparing.
Since 2009 John has studied intensively Chen style taiji with Grand Master Chen Zhenglei and his senior students, mainly Masters Wang Haijun, Fu Nengbin and Tong Jinwang, and now working with Master Yue Liming who has been instrumental since 1995, in introducing and establishing authentic Chen style Taijiquan into the UK and also the rest of Europe.
John has trained many times in China since 2004 and is a 12th generation direct line successor and indoor disciple of Grand Master Chen Zhenglei.
Now teaching at the Chen Style Tai Chi Centre in Manchester China Town and around the rest of the UK as well as Europe .
Training, studying and teaching the arts to help to promote Taiji (Tai Chi) Health to the world.
Other: In the 1990’s John worked as a sports injury masseur and taught at a leading north west massage school. From 1989 to 2004 John spent between 1 and 3 months most years in India with his Guru H.E. Zilnon Lingpa Rinpoche as well as organizing for him and being with him around Europe, and now often visiting his monastaries in Kham, China.
